
Bungaban Wind is a 1.4GW wind energy project that can be responsibly developed to complement existing land uses and produce sustainable, cost competitive energy for homes and industry within the next five years.
Bungaban Wind has the capacity to provide clean energy to the equivalent of one in three Queensland households, displacing about 4 million tonnes of carbon from the state’s energy generation profile every year.
The project will coexist with the region’s agricultural industry, delivering important benefits to the region and play a key role in support Queensland’s critical decarbonisation objectives.
During construction the project will create more than 1000 new Queensland jobs and inject around $500 million into the regional economy though local employment, supply, and contracting. Once operational, Bungaban Wind will occupy around 1 per cent of the combined area of its host properties.


A landmark Power Purchase Agreement will see 80 per cent of Bungaban Wind’s electricity supplied to Rio Tinto, helping power its Gladstone operations and support the future of Queensland’s metals and advanced manufacturing industries.
This agreement highlights the importance of large-scale renewable energy projects in securing a sustainable future for Queensland’s traditional industries like Gladstone’s metals smelting and refining operations. These industries employ thousands of people in regional communities across the state and have a key role to play in our nation’s low-carbon future.
The remaining 20 percent of Bungaban Wind’s electricity is allocated to Australia’s National Electricity Market (NEM) to support the delivery of clean, competitively priced power to Queensland homes, businesses, and industry.
